Ampersander's stich in time

Following the Summer 09/10 relaunch of her Sydney-based womenswear label, Ampersander, Angela Nash has been meticulously laying the foundations for sustainable growth.

In addition to creating small but versatile ranges and attracting stockers, Ms Nash has successfully completed Ethical Clothing Australia’s accreditation process.

Ampersander, with its focus on simple, cleverly cut shapes and cute details, is stocked in various boutiques around Sydney and at art markets such as finders-keepers.

“Accreditation is an important step for me. I want to make sure everything is done the right way. I’m increasingly using Fairtrade and organic fabrics to improve my products environmental and social performance. Likewise accreditation with Ethical Clothing Australia is important for demonstrating that Australian workers making my products are treated fairly. I see participation in the accreditation program as central to the concept of Ampersander being an ethical brand,” Ms Nash said.

Ethical Clothing Australia National Coordinator, Emer Diviney, said emerging brands that establish ethical supply chain processes and practices  in their formative years  find it easier to ensure ethical conditions as their supply chain grows.

“A stitch in time saves nine, as the saying goes. Some businesses find the need for transparency and supply chain monitoring a bit daunting, but if you’re familiar with your legal obligations from the beginning you can easily create systems to stay on top of things as your business expands,” Ms Diviney said.

Ms Diviney said Ethical Clothing Australia’s accreditation system was a great resource for any brands looking for a mechanism to help meet their legal obligations.

“The Accreditation process provides a framework for ensuring your products are made the right way. From basic things like registering your clothing business with FairWork Australia’s Board of Registration - or BOR, to ensuring minute rates paid to suppliers are adequate,” Ms Diviney said.

Like a number of emerging brands, such as accredited M&BM, Ampersander makes the most of online retail opportunities, and has a store on Madeit.com.au.
