Ethical Clothing Australia has welcomed its first accredited fashion accessories label, Lydra, adding to its existing stable of almost 60 Australian brands and manufacturers.

The Lydra range, which features one-of-a-kind clutches, travel wallets, satchels, modular bags and coin purses, is hand made in Melbourne and supports the elderly community. All items are made from pre-loved leather and fabrics.

The unique Lydra products all have a history and a story behind them. Each piece has been made by senior citizens, whereby they receive an income, a sense of fulfilment, a creative outlet and an opportunity to engage with others in their community. Customers share in this experience through their item’s swing tag, which identifies the maker and their story, as well as the past life of the fabric it is made from.

In becoming accredited Lydra owner and designer Linda Vydra said it was important to demonstrate her business’ ethical credentials to consumers.

“Too often we don’t know who or where our products were made. So in an industry that encourages ambiguity regarding the conditions under which products are manufactured, Lydra is a fresh and socially conscious brand that won’t leave consumers feeling guilty about their purchase,” Ms Vydra said.

Ethical Clothing Australia’s national coordinator Simon McRae commented that recent research conducted by the MobiumGroup found the Australian consumer market for more sustainable, including ethically sourced, products and services is expected to reach $27 billion in 2011.

“The growth and success of fair trading initiatives and movements in the US, UK and Europe really confirm that a solid base of ethically-minded consumers exists, and I would suggest that the Australian textile, clothing and footwear industry stands to capture a healthy slice of this market,” Mr McRae said.

Ethical Clothing Australia is a voluntary accreditation and labelling system that assists the local textile, clothing and footwear industry ensure Australian workers receive fair wages and decent conditions.

Once compliant, accredited brands are licensed to display the Ethical Clothing Australia trademark on their Australian-made products, providing consumers and buyers with a way to identify and support ethical Australian-made products.

Ethical Clothing Australia is a joint industry-union initiative governed by an independent, not-for-profit committee of management, the Homeworker Code Committee Inc, with representation from major stakeholders in the textile, clothing and footwear industry.
