Ethics set to become a classic essential as labelling initiative debuts at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week

Ethical Clothing Australia is set to make its debut at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week (RAFW) in Sydney next month amidst predictions that the trend towards ethical fashion is here to stay.

Ethical Clothing Australia’s national coordinator, Emer Diviney, said the presence at Fashion Week would help establish the organisation’s profile within the industry and highlight the valuable role it can play in assisting local fashion brands to tap into the ever growing market for ethical and sustainable goods.

“The growth and success of fair trading initiatives and movements in the US, UK and Europe really confirm that a solid base of ethically-minded consumers exists and are willing to spend up when they’re confident a brand is doing the right thing.

Now with Ethical Clothing Australia’s accreditation system, the Australian fashion industry has its own way to emphasize its ethical credentials in order to access this growing market both locally and on the international stage,” Ms Diviney said.

The not-for-profit initiative, which aims to assist the local industry to ensure that Australian workers receive fair wages and decent conditions, will have a stand in the Emerge section located at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay. Ethical Clothing Australia staff will be on hand to provide information to fashion brands and buyers alike.

With a number of the labels showing at the festival currently applying for accreditation, Ms Diviney has high hopes that showcases of ethical local brands will start to become regular fixtures at Australian festivals as is already the case in Paris, London and New York.

“The Ethical Clothing Australia labelling system is a fantastic concept and local brands are becoming increasingly interested in celebrating the uniqueness of Australia’s manufacturing scene and really bringing the world’s attention to our potential strengths in both design and ethical practices,” Ms Diviney said.
