Retro, Cheeky and Ethical: M&BM launches summer range
23/07/2010

A little Sydney fashion label with big ethical credentials is set to make a colourful arrival with the launch of their 70s inspired ‘retro-cheeky’ women’s range.

Unveiling a playful viral campaign on facebook, M&BM’s designer and co-owner, Stacey Brown, said not only is her fun summer range accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia, but her made-to-order business model minimised the brand’s environmental footprint.

“This range aims to settle the debate once and for all and show that ethical fashion can be fun, sexy and stylish,” Stacey said.

The range consist or 11 pieces that consumers can place orders for via the brand’s website.

“This is a chance for our customers to buy a piece and know it’s fairly unique – they’re not going walk down the street a see 101 people in the same dress. It’s been made specifically to their order. This is good for us as a business as it reduces the initial investment required, but it also ensures there is minimal waste in our production cycle,” Stacey said.

Ethical Clothing Australia’s National Coordinator, Emer Diviney, said the made-to-order approach contrasted many of the current trends in ‘fast’ or ‘disposable’ fashion.

“The National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisation estimates that up to 50 million kilograms of textile waste is collected annually by Australian clothing recyclers through charity bins and only a small portion of this is suitable for reuse or sale. The rest is sent to landfill,” Ms Diviney said.

Whilst welcoming M&BM’s focus on sustainability, Ms Diviney pointed out that environmental standards were not currently included in Ethical Clothing Australia’s joint business-union accreditation process.

“We assess the labour-standards within the participating brand’s Australian-supply chain. Brands licensed to display the Ethical Clothing Australia trademark on their Australian-made garments have taken practical steps to ensure that everyone involved in making them received fair wages and worked in decent conditions,” Ms Diviney said.
